English Language Learners (ELL) Support
ASD offers ELL support to all English Language Learner students who need significant support to access and comprehend academic content. Our ELL teachers work alongside students in the regular classroom as well as individually and in small groups in the ELL classroom. Students are selected based on subject-teacher referrals, classroom observations, and prior schooling history. ASD recently acquired curricula materials to help ELL students improve their English language skills.
For Lower School students, this includes ELL supplements in our Journeys ELA curriculum. For Upper School students we are using the Pioneer curriculum, with levels from Beginner to Intermediate. Classroom and subject teachers also differentiate instruction to support ELL students.
Special Needs (SEN)
The Special Needs Coordinator provides intervention support to Lower School students who demonstrate a need for academic and/or social and behavioral support. This determination is based on DIBELS reading skills assessments, MAP testing results (in mathematics, reading, and science), classroom observations, and teacher and parent referrals.
